Rara Avis

Moriarty and I take Oliver for a 20 minute walk every day. Around the golf course we live on. Today, as we walked past the pond between the 10th and 11th holes, we saw a big bird. We see lots of big beautiful birds down here. Ibis. Egrets. Pelicans. Canada Geese.

The bird was mostly white. Black head. Brown beak. It looked like a pelican.

" We need to look at the bird book when we get back to the house, " I said.

We wanted to know what kind of bird that was that was standing next to the pond.

We looked through the book. Couldn't find any birds that fit our description. The closest we came: White pelican. But white pelicans don't have black heads and their beaks are brown, not orange.

Mystery. Who doesn't love not knowing, exactly, what one sees on a walk?

Go for a walk. No telling what you might see. And don't worry if you have trouble identifying that which you spot. Sometimes not knowing is better than knowing.

Today is a Tuesday. No sabbath this.

Sounds like a wood stork.

Tap it with a golf club and see if it clicks.
