What is the deal? The Tea Party guys are outraged. But what would have happened if the votes went the other way? We would have been better off? Lower taxes? Less spending? I don't get it. The elephant in the room, in my humble opinion , is Obama. A black man who sits not in a slave's quarters on a plantation down south. He sits, and will continue to do so for the next four years, in the White...
House.
Don't bother me with arguments that suggest there is no racist card in this deck.

Could YOU be the racist?
I probably am. To a degree. A small one I think. I try to think " we're all human beings. " But God didn't charge Noah with rounding up " some animals." The cargo was diverse ( Da Verse ones were da cows, who had a methane gas flatulence problem, but that's an udder story. )We are all different, and it's hard for me not to look at someone and think: I gotta be better than this guy! In some way. We were at the Wal-Mart today. I saw two midgets ( I'm not making this up ) standing at the checkout counter. I was going to say to Donna, but didn't yield to temptation, " Let's go over there. That looks like the shortest line in the store." Racist? No. But my thought was cruel, and suggested that I do, indeed, look down at...
I'll stop here. Touche.
Don't take L'il's bait, Terry...There are many in this country whose hatred of Barack Obama stems from their racism. Some of them serve in Congress.

jc,
Name a few. With some supporting evidence.

I think it's almost impossible to really " know " who's a racist. Since we're talking about Congress, you could take a look at how they voted over the years. But that isn't a great way to tell. Politicians are so good at talking their way out of holes they dig. I happen to think Rush Limbaugh is a racist. This is based on years of listening to the way he talks about Blacks, makes fun of the way some of them talk ( Any time you hear someone who's not Black parody Black speech by using the word " Aks " for ask is a clue ) But it's based more on a gut feeling. Like the old Supreme Court comment about what and what is not pornography. " You know it when you see it. " There may be no scientific, proof of who's a racist and who is not. But knowing jc as well as I do ( She's one of my best friends and has been for decades. I can't adequately describe the good she has done. For battered women, Katrina victims, to name just two groups ) If she says someone's a racist, I think she's probably right. But proof? There is no real litmus test. We just have to consider the source. JC's opinions on these matters matter. As do yours, my friend.
OK, so I have had time to ponder L'il's request for examples of racist members of Congress, with "supporting evidence".
(Newt Gingrich, though no longer in Congress, thank GAWD, has said some terribly racist things...)
My friend Virginia and I have discussed Race in America a lot over the years. I am going to pursue this one with her, since she has had to deal with racism, overtly and thinly veiled, all her life. I am pretty sure her response will be that though many don't outwardly proclaim their beliefs in the inferiority of blacks and other minorities, they do so through coded words and phrases, through patronizing and hypocritical behavior, and in promoting hurtful/shameful stereotypes.
I'll get back to you. Maybe Virginia will as well.

The suspense is killing me.
Well, it looks like this thread is off the front page. The obvious takeaway is that we shouldn't offer sweeping, accusatory statements as facts when they are only personal opinions.
I tend to do that myself, l'il em. No excuses.
First off I want to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question
in which I'd like to ask if you don't mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself
and clear your thoughts prior to writing. I've had a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out. I do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints? Thanks!
